Another page from The Sketchbook Project

Here is another page from my sketchbook project FALLING.  I am working in some greys to distinguish parts of the structure from other parts.  I hope it works.

WIP - Fireman

This is a work-in-progress, I was inspired by one of my good friends Jamie, who is a firefighter in Las Vegas.  She is such a great person, a firefighter, mother to twins and braver than I could ever be.  I wanted to do something for all firefighters.  This is this first round of inks, I imagine it will change but it seems to be coming along for now.

The Sketchbook Project 2010

I have finally started my sketchbook for The Sketchbook Project, put on by The ArtHouse Co-Op Check them out here:   da'lsdkj'adijja'dkmc'ad

The rundown is this:
---------------------------------------------
Thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the country.

After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view.
----------------------------------------------
I ordered my sketchbook and picked a theme of 'Nightmare' so everything in this will have to do with that.  My first sketch is the one above, falling.

Nuke the Fridge Con

So I did my first artist alley table at the Nuke the Fridge Con, a couple of weeks ago.  I have to say it was terrifying and then empowering.  I never really thought about it but I had never drawn in front of anyone outside a classroom setting.  I was scared out of my mind.  But I got a couple of cards under my belt and I felt much more confident.  I did pretty well for a small show I had some commissions and sold some cards, and some prints.  Good time all around, I can;t wait til I can do it again.

Killing Spider-Man? Really? Where is Seth and Amy when you need them.

Maybe I am in the minority, but killing heroes really doesn't get me to buy comics. Death means ABSOLUTELY ZERO in this generation of comics. Death should mean something, now it doesn't, it just means that they are gone for 12 issues. I am losing respect for titles that are using death as a catalyst for changing the nature of the character. Every year doesn't need a death or a universe changing event. Tell good stories, take the characters on new and interesting adventures, but stop using death as a crutch. [/soapbox]

Oh my God!  I can't believe that I never posted the final Day of Halloween!  My weekend was so full that I thought that I had done it already.  then a lot of people asked about the final sketch.  Boy do I feel silly.  Anyway, the final is a scary monster that my wife requested.  SHELOB

Finally Finished - Vader and his Two Masters

I started this a long time ago  See pencils here and here. Well I finally finished it.  I wanted to get it done for the Long Beach Comic Con and while I did.  It wasn't a piece that anybody saw much less commented on.  I am still glad I finished it.

I call it Vader and His Two Masters, Qui-Gonn and Emperor Palpitine.  All done with pen and ink on heavy bristol paper, measures about 6"x10"

Day 29: The 30 Days of Halloween is almost done!

The Frankenstein monster from the Van Helsing movie.  About the only decenty thing in that movie, besides Kate Beckendale's corset.

30 Days of Halloween - Day 28: It's Chucky!

There is little more terrifying than a dolll that has come to life.  Then give that doll a knife and creepy voice and you have Chucky.  I drew him with cuts and stitches cause, well, I think he is more interesting that way.  :)

Day 27: 30 Days of Halloween - Leatherface!

I have never seen "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" that is how much it scares me.  I saw the beginning where the creepy guy gets into their truck.  I was out!  Weirdo creepies I don't like.

My son, the author

My son just turned four and a couple of weeks ago, the Story Pirates, performed a story he came come up at the Geffen Theatre in Westwood.  We were so proud.

Meet the Author at Story Pirates

Day 26: 30 Days of Halloween - What Scares You?

Clowns, and thanks to Stephen King, they have a name and it is Pennywise.  Tim Curry really made this guy scary.  Some people just hate clowns in general, not me, I hate this clown in particular.

Day 25: 30 Days of Halloween - For Copen

Today's sketch is dedicated to my sister Copen.  I knew of Phantom of the Paradise before I knew there was a Phantom of the Opera, because of her.  :)

Day 24: 30 Days of Halloween. Halloween Week!

I saw this kid at comic-con and he was really great.  I was trying to get across a kid in make-up,  I hope I did.

Day 23: 30 Days of Halloween - Smile!

I loved Heath Ledger's Joker.  I thought he came across just as insane and evil as I always expected.

Sick House, Got some catching up to do! 30 Days of Halloween

We have a bug going through our house and I have gotten behind on scanning my Halloween sketches.  So I am taking this opportunity of my sick son curling up and watching a cartoon to post the last three days of sketches.

Day 20: Vincent Price

Day 21: The Phantom of the Opera (a misspelling just inspired my next sketch!)

Day 22: Friday is Zombie Freakiness!

I should be able to keep up for the rest of the month ( I hope)  Have a great weekend!

Day 19: 30 Days of Halloween - London after Midnight

I love this images from this lost piece of film history.  If you aren't familiar, London After Midnight (1927) is a silent mystery film with horror overtones. The film stars Lon Chaney. It is also a lost film, quite possibly the most famous and eagerly-sought of all lost films. The last known copy was destroyed in a fire in an MGM film vault in 1967.It is also known as The Hypnotist.
"The abandoned home of a wealthy man who supposedly committed suicide five years earlier is taken over by ghoulish figures - could they be vampires?"

Day 18: 30 Days of Halloween - Pinhead

We all hate him, we all fear him.  He is the most unlikely creature.  A guy with nails pounded into the squares on his skin.  He is from Hellraiser, he is PINHEAD.

Day 17: 30 Days of Halloween - Rob Zombie

Today is the day for the most recent King of Horror and awesome Kings fan, Rob Zombie.  The dude is just scary period.

Day 16: 30 Days of Halloween - Eddie the 'ead.

I didn't have time to scan yesterday, but I did draw Eddie, (from the Iron Maiden album covers) dressed up like a mummy (circa the Powerslave album)  I will scan it as soon as I can.

*update*

Okay I was able to finally scan yesterdays card.  Here it is:

Day 15: 30 Days of Halloween. Jason's Turn

By request.  Friday the 13th's JASON VOORHEES.  Coming right at'cha. This one was difficult cause there was a specific coloring I wanted to do in the mask, I think it is close, but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for.  Anyway.  I thought it was fitting for a Friday!  Boo.

Day 13 - 30 Days of Halloween - Barrel of Fun!

Whew, made it!  This is lucky day 13.  I went back to Nightmare Before Christmas and drew Barrel that little mischievous Trick 'r Treater.

I have been told that I have made a mistake and that there are 31 days in October.  Yes, this is true, but I am only drawing on 30 of those days...I have a 4 year old and I will be quite busy on the 31st.  :)

Day 12: 30 days of Halloween

There was a request on the Scoundrel Art forum if I could do some "Monster Squad" stuff from the 80's.  Well here is my first try, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, depicted in the movie Monster Squad.  I may color it later, but for this project, black/white means done.  :)

Day 11 - 30 Days of Halloween - Frankenstein

Ack!  I am getting behind with scanning the sketches!  Anyway, here is yesterdays sketch.  Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster.  I love this character, it is my favorite of all the Universal Monsters.

30 days of Halloween - Day 7 Request day

I posted a question on facebook and asked for requests.  One of my high school friends wanted our school mascot fighting another mascot, well I was feeling zombie-ish, so instead I took our GHS mascot a Mohican, and made him a zombie.  Separated jaws are difficult!  LOL

Long Live GHS Mohicans!

30 days of Halloween - Day 6, update on an old favorite

Update on an old favorite, The Phantom of the Opera.  Not the classic Lon Chaney Jr., no this is Robert Eglund of the Nightmare on Elm St. movies.  A red and scarred face hidden behind a grotesque skull mask.

I am still not going to go to sleep around him.

30 Days of Halloween - Day 5

Today's sketch is the always creepy Boris Karloff as "The Mummy"

30 Days of Halloween - Day 4

Okay, I know that this being posted late, but I just didn;t have time to scan it last night.  I was trying to think of what to do and I though of "Trick-or-Treater Tuesdays"!  (Coming to a Hooters near you this fall  lol)  This is a little Mummy and he is so proud of his costume.

30 Days of Halloween - Day 3

Day 3 of my Halloween sketches.  A hungry zombie, looking for brains.  The scan didn't seem to capture all of my awesome color variations. :p

30 Days of Halloween - Day 2

A suggestion from a Facebook friend.  Jack Skellington taking a nice crunchy bite out of a Christmas ornament.  I like Jack, I will probaby do more of him.  I got some other suggestions, I will have to think about how to do them, some of them are kinda "out there"  LOL.
