Day 14: 30 Days of Halloween

This was a quick one of the werewolf from Monster Squad.  I am going to try and do all of the members.

Day 13 - 30 Days of Halloween - Barrel of Fun!

Whew, made it!  This is lucky day 13.  I went back to Nightmare Before Christmas and drew Barrel that little mischievous Trick 'r Treater. 

I have been told that I have made a mistake and that there are 31 days in October.  Yes, this is true, but I am only drawing on 30 of those days...I have a 4 year old and I will be quite busy on the 31st.  :)

Day 12: 30 days of Halloween

There was a request on the Scoundrel Art forum if I could do some "Monster Squad" stuff from the 80's.  Well here is my first try, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, depicted in the movie Monster Squad.  I may color it later, but for this project, black/white means done.  :)

Day 11 - 30 Days of Halloween - Frankenstein

Ack!  I am getting behind with scanning the sketches!  Anyway, here is yesterdays sketch.  Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster.  I love this character, it is my favorite of all the Universal Monsters.

Day 9 - 30 Days of Halloween

Another long day at the expo, so I didn't get the sketch done until late tonite, but still on day nine!  I can't scan it this late so like yesterday, I will upload it later.  Tonites sketch was a Witch and a boiling cauldron.  Another request froma facebook friend.

Okay, I do have the sketch doen, but I finished it so late that I cannot scan it tonite.  I will post the image later.  I am working at the Screenwriters Expo in LA this weekend, so I don;t have a lot of free time.  But I did do one, it is an evil pumpkin.

I posted a question on facebook and asked for requests.  One of my high school friends wanted our school mascot fighting another mascot, well I was feeling zombie-ish, so instead I took our GHS mascot a Mohican, and made him a zombie.  Separated jaws are difficult!  LOL

Update on an old favorite, The Phantom of the Opera.  Not the classic Lon Chaney Jr., no this is Robert Eglund of the Nightmare on Elm St. movies.  A red and scarred face hidden behind a grotesque skull mask. 

I am still not going to go to sleep around him.

Okay, I know that this being posted late, but I just didn;t have time to scan it last night.  I was trying to think of what to do and I though of "Trick-or-Treater Tuesdays"!  (Coming to a Hooters near you this fall  lol)  This is a little Mummy and he is so proud of his costume.

A suggestion from a Facebook friend.  Jack Skellington taking a nice crunchy bite out of a Christmas ornament.  I like Jack, I will probaby do more of him.  I got some other suggestions, I will have to think about how to do them, some of them are kinda "out there"  LOL.

30 Days of Halloween - Day 1

I wanted to do a "__ Days of ____" project.  I thought Halloween would be a great place to start.  I am going to do a halloween-themed piece of art every day until Oct 30.  I am hoping some interesting work happens during this. 

Won't you please join me in the journey into the Macabre?  Muah ha ha!

Today is a sketch card of my son on our first door-to-door Halloween trip.  Some of the houses really spooked him, but he had just turned 3 so I totally understood.  He had no idea what Halloween was, "They just give me candy??"  It was the most wonderful he had ever imagined.  :)

SW:F'D Star Cover Artist: CHRIS THORNE

Gardena, California. Population; 57,746. One of those folks just happens to be our current cover artist, Chris Thorne!

"Star Wars" has been a large influence on Chris since he was a child. "It just seems like a perfect movie," and Ralph McQuarrie's conceptual art for the film certinatly left an impression back then. The endless visual splendor of the "Star Wars" universe, including the Dark Horse comic series, "Star Wars: Legacy", continues to inspire Chris to this day!

Chris discovered his talent for drawing early on, when he made original pieces of art for Christmas. "I was…God, six or seven maybe?  I didn’t have a gift for my Mom and so I drew people and things on cardboard, colored them and cut them out, glued them onto paper, rolled them up and put them in a canister to be put under the tree."

 
These days, Chris is using blue non-photo pencils, India ink, and charcoal along with his markers, and pens. "I also use Bristol, Watercolor and Comic Illustration papers." His favorite style of artwork is the pointillist technique, stippling. The painstaking process of creating an image by making thousands of dots. "I did my wedding invitations in a stippled technique and my wife loved it."

There's no better escape than art for Chris. "There is no better feeling than how I feel at the end of a very satisfying session," he explains. "People need an outlet for the real world and they need art to escape." What better world of art to escape to than the "Star Wars" universe?

Speaking of which, we asked a few questions about that galaxy far, far away...

SW:F'D: What is your FAVORITE STAR WARS EPISODE?
CT: My Favorite is Ep.4 ANH.  It just seems like a perfect movie.  As I have gotten older, I appreciate Ep. 5 ESB, but ANH will always be my favorite, the one I watch when I just want to escape.  I love making fun of the whinny Luke, and his need for power converters, but that is because I love it so much.

SW:F'D: Who is your FAVORITE STAR WARS CHARACTER?
CT: It is pretty close between Han and Darth Vader, but I think I am gonna have to say Darth Vader.  He is just the coolest freaking bad guy ever.  He just steals every scene he is in.

SW:F'D: What do you think would win in a fight? A Dewback, or an Orray?
CT: I would have to say an Orray, I think they are more battle hardened and breed for that.  Dewbacks seem more docile.  But since Dewbacks are much bigger than Orrays maybe that would be enough to win a battle, maybe they would just sit on them.  Can I change my answer?  I want to see the Dewback kick the Orray’s butt.

SW:F'D: What do you think Blue Milk tastes like?
CT: I had some when I was a kid, it tastes like Pepto-Bismol actually, now that I think about it, it did seem pinker than I expected and…Damnit, I gotta find my friend Craig.  He freakin’ tricked me.

SW:F'D: Any final words?
CT: Han shot first and I want the original versions of the original trilogy on blu-ray.
